LAUREL – About 30 cars were lined up in front of Howard Industries’ Laurel plant today filled with people looking for jobs.

An estimated 350 workers are being held at an undisclosed location following an early morning raid Monday on Howard Industries that officials say is the largest round-up of its type in Mississippi in recent years.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said the 350 employees at a Howard Industries plant in Laurel are in the country illegally.

Federal warrants were issued at the plant early Monday and also at the corporate headquarters in Ellisville.

Shantay Holles, 26, of Heidelberg said she used to work at Howard Industries as an electric tester but was fired last year. She said she is applying today because she heard on the news about the ICE raid.

“That’s all they would hire – Mexican, Mexican, Mexican!” Holles said. (more…)

Obama is clearly outspending McCain in spite of the fact that both MoveOn.org raise concern whether or not victory will be so easy and Zogby puts McCain as having a 5 point lead over Obama. People just view McCain as a stronger candidate on the economic front, Zogby reports. A rather easy decisionw hen you look at things like energy policy.

The Illinois Democrat raised more than $50 million in July, a slight dip from the previous month, according to his monthly financial report, filed around midnight Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission. He spent about $55 million, with three-fifths of that devoted to media costs.

McCain had his best fundraising month yet, collecting more than $26 million. He, too, spent heavily — a total of $32 million, of which two-thirds was on advertising.

North Korea is really an expert at trying to bend countries to their will. They will agree to one thing and when the US or other nations meet their terms on it they will begin the process of fulfilling their end of the bargain and then suddenly be so dissatisfied with something else they cannot possibly continue. It’s an endless game, and we shouldn’t play it:

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said Tuesday it has stopped disabling its nuclear reactor and will consider restoring the plutonium-producing facility in anger over Washington’s failure to remove it from the U.S. list of terror sponsors.

The North’s statement marks the emergence of the biggest hurdle yet to the communist nation’s denuclearization process and is expected to escalate tension in the nuclear talks involving China, Japan, the two Koreas, the U.S. and Russia.

Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry said it suspended the disablement work at the reactor and other facilities at its Yongbyon nuclear complex as of Aug. 14 because the U.S. did not keep its promise to delist Pyongyang as a terror sponsor under last year’s deal.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds angrily condemned the segment of Madonna’s concert in Cardiff on Saturday that appeared to draw a comparison between McCain, Hitler and Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe.

“The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time,” Bounds said in a statement reported by Fox News.

“It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits.” (more…)

So a lot of young kids give a lot when they are in the Army.

And they go to a foreign country and they turn 19 or 20 or 21 and they only know a few guys and they have almost no choice in friends, they just have to make due.

In the Army you see Nu-Metal guys hanging out with Hip Hop guys and Texas guys with New York and Montana guys and black with white with yellow with brown and everyone is on their own for a while, and their friends come and go once a year, but they really aren’t friends… Just buddies. Bangladesh police say a crocodile killed and ate a 25-year-old after he waded into a pond next to a shrine in an attempt to receive the animal’s blessing, news.com.au reported Friday.

Inspector Humayun Kabir said Rubel Sheikh and his mother traveled to the Muslim Khan Jahan Ali shrine, where hundreds of people visit every day to offer hens and goats to the crocodiles living there.

Part of the shrine ritual involves bathing in the water with the crocodiles, but devotees are very rarely approached by the animals, according to Kabir.

“He went into the pond hoping to be blessed when a crocodile attacked him and dragged him into the deep part of the pond,” Kabir told the Australian Associated Press.

Los Angeles officials have banned new fast food restaurants from an impoverished part of the city packed with roadside chains and battling high rates of obesity.

The city council voted unanimously in favour of a year-long moratorium on new outlets such as McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Carl’s Jr in 32 square miles of South Los Angeles.

The area is home to 500,000 people and predominantly Hispanic and African-American. Thirty per cent of the population is obese, compared to 19 per cent for Los Angeles as a whole and 14.1 per cent in affluent suburbs to the west.

A survey found 73 per cent of the area’s restaurants are fast food compared to 42 per cent in West Los Angeles.

Bureaucrats for the win — fixing our problems one at a time. God knows regulating things and essentially securing existing fast food chains by eliminating competition is going to fix the issues.

Because obesity stems from the fact that humans have a choice as opposed to the fact that they do not care for themselves, right?

And when you thought political violence and assault carried out to repress people was over, the anti-fascists prove to us that we can count on them:

An extreme left wing group has offered a cash reward to anyone who assaults a notorious Nazi teenager in Uppsala in eastern Sweden.

At least this is what ‘Antifascistisk Aktion’ (Afa) promises on flyers posted all around the university town.

Afa’s website also encourages people to assault the 18-year-old Nazi, and promises 500 kronor ($90) to anyone who carries out the attack and can provide photographic evidence.
